He’s making a lot of blanket statements about digital while simultaneously admitting it’s completely foreign to him … you just print zeroed out stems of your final session and save raw audio of the multitracks, it’s really not that complicated. Granted you need to migrate your data to new storage mediums every so often, but that’s no different than needing to properly store your beloved analog tapes. His experiences with people not being able to open their archived digital sessions sounds like user error to me.

I think he is short sided on digital. From a DAW prospective after 25 years I can access everything I have at the drop of a hat. I made sure to transfer my media into digital .Wav files. All my old masters are easily recalled from 25 years ago. I was meticulous though and an old record that didn’t get the love may be different. Concert your tracks on tape to digital asap and back up on 3x spots. RIP Steve you are the professor of my generation in production and mixing. I wish I had been your studio Intern. 😢

When Steve talks it becomes clear that he was a student of history and philosophy - loads of perspective, beyond your typical modern person.

I like Albini but the digital vs. analog talk is complete bs. Of course you are able to read digital music in 2024. Sure, for some formats you need older machines but hey, a tape machine is not exactly a new invention and if you’re talking of “expired” equipment, you must admit that tape machines are just that as well, so… This is just nonsensical nostalgia with no substance behind it whatsoever. …and I say all this being the frontman of a band that makes 60s/70s inspired music and I LOVE the vintage sound. Nevertheless truth is that tape brings you no sound benefits. You have to be superstitious to believe in this. Unfortunately the recording community is overpopulated with superstition, voodoo thinking, self delusion, etc.

One might think the the people recording this master class by a renowned recording engineer could have somehow mustered up the foresight and ability to make the questions being asked at the end somehow magically be able to have been heard on the video recording. Maybe I am asking for too much.

Analog is far superior to digital sound, yet, as most of you know, you can backup to multiple HD’s stored in multiple locations and cloud storage. I don’t see investing a boatload of money into a full analog studio for the purpose of archival integrity. It makes complete sense for a guy like Steve Albini and I can respect it, yet for most of us it’s totally absurd.

Damn, he really had the wrong idea about digital audio in the beginning... I sorta understand what he means by "losing the sessions" as in the session file might not work in the future, but you can still extract the PCM files recorded on them... That standard hasn't changed and will probably never change... and even then, it's an open standard, making a PCM decoder is basically trivial. Tapes WILL degrade with time and copies will have a penalty in quality. Digital copies will have NO quality loss whatsoever and can be stored in a pletora of different formats... It's actually the other way around, analog physical tapes have their days numbered where digital recordings will live on. It's a shame that the dismissal of digital audio comes from not understanding how it actually works... Losing the sounds of a midi synth plugin, sure, but anything that has been bounced to a PCM file will always be there...

I wish he could have recorded Maurizio Pollini playing Chopin. It would have been great. What a brilliant humane man.

I love his recording of The Breeders record. Partly, it's the band. But his bass and drums are so rich on certain sounds, and it was so different from a lot of the dryer, thinner recordings I was hearing at the time. It feels so present and alive, and those cymbals and guitar pop just right in their contrast. I'm still trying to accept that he's gone. He brought recordings to life. Neat guy.

This is terribly a huge fucking loss....I'm not musician or any sort, but I have utmost respect for him. The fact that I will not hear anything from him ever again is unimaginably hard to swallow.
